Dainty Mom’s recent blog post entitled “Blogging and WAHM-ing without ignoring my family: Achieving the balance” is something I can 100% relate to.  I’ve always said it over and over that I really love how I am able to help augment the family income while homemaking…of how I feel so blessed for not going through the daily hardships of corporate moms, feeling guilty leaving them behind every morning or stressing one’s self while in the work place thinking about the kids at home.  I feel so lucky that I can do my online work at my own pace then still be able to slip the steak on kamado grills for my kids’ lunch.  I’m fortunate that I can work in my jammies and breastfeed my daughter while having skype-ing with my boss.

Yes, it’s definitely the perfect example of the phrase “getting the best of both worlds”.  However, this setup also entails a lot of challenge.  The most difficult of which is achieving the balance.

It was in December of 2010 when I was made to realize that there was no longer a balance.  Projects were pouring left and right.  I worked throughout the day and since there was too much load and the hefty payouts were too huge to resist, I extended my working hours until late night and sometimes up to the wee hours of the morning allowing me to just have 2 hours of sleep.  Lack of sleep translates to crankiness and there were even times when I easily get irked by my son’s misbehavior.  I had just a little time attending to my child’s needs and the husband and I barely talked before sleeping at night because my laptop is still turned on.  And then, it happened.  Too much stress plus not getting enough sleep made me sick.  I was hospitalized not just once but twice in a month. That really hit me hard and made me realize that I was abusive of my health and I was being unfair to my family. 

That incident was my switch to turn back the balance between work and homemaking.  It reminded me that my family is still my number one priority.  After recovering, I set myself limits.  No more working until late night and more so in the wee hours of the morning.  That I can only start working in the morning after sending off my first born to school and after my finishing my baby’s morning rituals.  That I eat on time and never miss a meal.  My ordeal was a horrendous experience and it’s a lesson that I will always be reminded whenever I turn my laptop on.

It’s been a while since I visited the salon so I’m really looking forward to have some pampering “me” time one of these days.
